That’s gross. The US needs to fix their shit. Gun control and the right to bear arms are not mutually exclusive.

Unfortunately, that ship set sail a long time ago. Now I suspect the most that can be done is damage control - probably past the time for most proactive measures.

True. But, overtime you could maybe take them out of circulation kinda like the UK, Canada and Australia?

I dunno, I’m no expert in the history of firearms legislation in those nations

Mate, you live closer to them than we do and probably see more on the news than we do.

Trying to get the U.S. to do something about gun control is the definition of a lost cause.

You may as well just turn around, face the wall and bang your head repeatedly till all thoughts about the topic stop.

There will always be someone who will argue the toss and come up with the most tenuous reason to not do anything. My favourite is, ‘why should I be hindered getting a firearm, I’m a responsible gun owner’ yadda yadda.

Good idea on paper, but no. Try to confiscate or even mandate registration in Murka, and you’d have a fight and likely casualty count that the worst of the old British Empire gongshow couldn’t imagine. There are a lot of people with “anxiety” (as the fascists call it) who desperately cling to their things that go boom, and books full of fanciful old tales, and will fight to the end to protect them. You won’t get more than hopes and prayers from them.

You’d think that with more people dying from guns in one year outnumbering all the fatalities in several active theatres of war over the whole period of conflict would motivate people into doing something but no, the insanity just goes on.

I mean just the other day, Baltimore celebrated having no homicides for 11 days, which in itself sounds crazy, but then you read that there was still shootings, just no fatalities. CRAZY!!!

You guys be safe okay.

The thing is, if this was any other country, America would be at the podium decrying it.

Kinja'd!!!

and this isn’t 100% of all the incidents and is only up to the 14th of February, 2018.

We’re only 45 days into the year. There is another 320 to go.

There two very important facts at play - they go hand in hand

1- Gun lobbyists/special interests/gun companies dump millions upon millions upon millions of dollars into politician’s coffers to make sure stricter gun regulations don’t get off the ground. They (politicians with lined pockets, lobbyists, special interests, etc) also spend a lot of money and time trying to convince the gun loving public that the idea of stricter gun control laws/regulations means that legislators calling for it are trying to take their guns away. They are not.

2- Majority of people in the US are notorious for not learning the most they can about a situation, especially political, so said gun loving public absolutely believes them that politicians calling for stricter gun control will come to their homes and repossess their guns. This is not what has been proposed but these certain people still believe it. They don’t understand that it’s not a cut & dry situation where there’s no stricter laws and you keep your guns or the government will pass stricter laws and come take all your guns away. No one is proposing repealing the 2nd amendment . But they believe it when the gun companies, their people, and the politicians say that’s what will happen.

There absolutely needs to be stricter gun laws. People are always quick to point to Chicago as an example of how gun control laws don’t work. What they conveniently leave out is this: drive in any direction, sometimes as little as an hour drive, and you’re in a place where there are extremely lax gun laws. That’s where a lot of the guns in Chicago come from, illegally brought in from places that will basically hand you a gun free with purchase of a pack of gum (metaphorically).

Another argument is that guns aren’t the cause, mental illness is the cause. There’s some truth to this (we all know more needs to be done in the US to address the betterment of mental health treatment). The idea that someone wanting to do harm will find a way to do so is, to a point, true. However, the logical conclusion is that while that’s probably true, they’d probably do less damage with virtually any other weapon (obviously a homemade bomb or some such could do more damage, I’m not talking about the average angry Joe making a homemade bomb).

And finally, my thought is that if a kid has easy access to an adult’s gun(s) and shoots a place up, the parents should be charged as well as the kid (if he survives). This is very touchy subject/idea, but I stand by it.

I totally agree with your points. Parents should 100% be charged. They would be in Canada for improper storage.

It would be a very touchy subject here, but I think it should happen. It’s just fucking enough, you know? Stricter gun laws, that I dare say should mimic Canada’s, including proper storage.

You’re in Florida too? I’m not alone!

But this is fucked up. I’m a high schooler in the Kissimmee area and seeing that this happens even in Florida makes me feel unsafe. All I know is if there’s a school shooting I’ll do all I can do prevent anyone from getting hurt and take the L if I have to. I’ve seen fucked up things happen where I first lived, didn’t think I’d have to see another thing related to it in a new state. Reminds me how fucked up the world is.

College student in Tallahassee, but my house is in Boca. My parents and I have been on the phone for an hour and a bit since they’re 10 minutes away. Several family friends’ kids go to that school.

I saw that on twitter, it’s horrible. According to on scene law enforcement officers, there’s 15 fatalities, both students and faculty. This is the 18th school shooting in 2018 alone.

18 school shootings in 45 days.

At least 14 kids who are never going to go back to their families.

Thousands whose lives are forever changed.

The mental health apologists never seem to further the conversation after deflecting. How about a 200-500% tax on firearm sales to help fund mental healthcare?

You sound like a relatively level headed person. Now if only we could get our lawmakers to get their collective heads out of their collective asses and actually do the right thing, we’d be a lot better off.

If they allowed civil suits, that wouldn’t be a bad thing. They’ve done the same with alcohol and allowing minors to drink on your premises. Used to be cool to let kids party and drink at your house as long as they were not allowed behind the wheel. Now they prosecute parents of the readidence that allowed the party of kids are involved in an incident even the next day. I know it’s changed how most parents proceed with the kids and partying. I would imagine similar things would happen if parents were charged or held financially responsible for gun violence if it were their weapon used.

At this point, I have no clue what it would take to accomplish that. Whether it’s gun control or any one of the myriad of other issues facing this country.

It makes it even more interesting (IMHO) if you compare it to other somewhat similar countries. Like Canada, Australia, Germany or the UK. Corrected for population size obviously.
